Gloss isn’t expanding.

Work through these in order. Each is something macOS or an app can change without warning.

  1. Check the menu bar icon

Open Gloss from the menu bar. A green dot means it’s active and watching for your triggers; a grey dot means it’s paused, so switch Enable Gloss back on.

  2. Grant Accessibility

Gloss needs Accessibility access to replace text. Turn Gloss on under System Settings › Privacy & Security › Accessibility. If Gloss stops working after a macOS or app update, remove it from the list and add it again — its code signature may have changed.

  3. Secure Input

In password fields, password managers, or Terminal with Secure Keyboard Entry, macOS turns on Secure Input and blocks all keystroke monitoring. Gloss pauses, shows a lock in the menu bar, and names the app that turned it on, so you know which window to close or which setting to change. This is a macOS security feature and cannot be bypassed.

  4. Apps Gloss can’t read

A few apps publish no text to macOS accessibility, so Gloss leaves your typing untouched rather than guess. The menu bar names the app, and you’ll find it under Settings › App Rules › Compatibility. In Visual Studio Code, set editor.accessibilitySupport to Auto or On, then reopen your editor tab. In Terminal and iTerm, turn off Secure Keyboard Entry if nothing expands at all.

  5. Check your per-app rules

If you’ve excluded the app you’re typing in, or changed how Gloss types there, expansions won’t appear. Review these under Settings › App Rules.

Licence, updates and your account.

Your licence and Macs

  • Find your licence keyOpen Gloss Settings › Licence and choose Reveal to see your key in full. It’s also in your purchase email and in your account at app.trygloss.tech.
  • Move to a new MacA Pro licence is active on one Mac at a time. On the old Mac, choose Deactivate This Mac in Settings › Licence (or deactivate from your account); then enter your key on the new Mac and choose Activate.
  • Working offlineAfter activation, Gloss checks your licence about every six hours. If it can’t reach the licence server, Pro keeps working for seven days, then Pro features pause until the next successful check. Free features never stop.

Updates

Gloss updates itself through Sparkle, the open-source updater. Every version is free on both plans for the life of the product, and you can turn automatic checks off in Gloss’s settings.
