Terms of Service

These terms are the agreement between you and JoshMTech, the UK sole trader behind Gloss. They cover using the app, buying a Pro licence, your website account, and uploading community glossaries. Your rights as a consumer always apply, and the law of England and Wales governs the agreement.

About these terms

Gloss is provided by JoshMTech, a sole trader based in the United Kingdom (“JoshMTech”, “we”, “us”, “our”). These terms (“Terms”) govern the Gloss macOS app, the websites at trygloss.tech and app.trygloss.tech, the community glossary library, and any Pro licence you buy.

By downloading or using Gloss, creating an account, or buying a licence, you accept these Terms. If you do not accept them, please do not use Gloss.

If there is any conflict, the End User Licence Agreement governs your licence to use the app and the Refund Policy governs refunds.

Your account

You do not need an account to use the free tier. To manage a Pro licence you sign in at app.trygloss.tech.

Sign-in uses a single-use link sent to your email address (a “magic link”) that is valid for 15 minutes. There is no password to remember.
Keep access to your email secure and do not share your licence key or sign-in links. Tell us at support@trygloss.tech if you think someone else has gained access.
Please use one account per person. You are responsible for activity that happens under your account.

The app: free and Pro

Gloss is a text expander for macOS 15 or later. It is licensed, not sold; the End User Licence Agreement sets out the licence in full.

Free tier.No licence and no time limit: up to 10 active glosses you create — including dynamic, rich and script (GlossScript) glosses, date maths, filters, the picker, iCloud sync and per-app rules — plus importing snippets from other apps (only the first ten run on the free tier).
Pro. A one-time purchase that unlocks unlimited glosses, the bundled presets, forms, key actions, nested glosses, importing and creating .glossary files, and on-device AI features (which also need macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence).
A Pro licence is active on one Mac at a time. To move it, deactivate in the app or your dashboard and activate on the other Mac.
You can buy several Pro licences in one purchase, for example for a team, and give each licence key to one person who uses Gloss for you or with your permission. Each licence is still active on one Mac at a time, and you remain responsible for how the licences you bought are used.
Every version of Gloss is free for everyone for the life of the product. There are no subscriptions, renewals or paid upgrade windows.

Prices and payment

Prices are shown on the pricing page in pounds sterling (GBP). The price shown at checkout is the total you pay; a valid promotion code may reduce it.
We are not registered for VAT, so no VAT is added to or included in the price.
Payments are handled by Stripe on Stripe's hosted checkout. We never see or store your card details.
Pro is a one-time purchase that includes all future updates at no extra cost. We may change prices at any time; a change only affects purchases made after it takes effect.

Cancellations and refunds

Gloss Pro is digital content that we supply immediately, so cancellation works like this:

You have a statutory 14-day right to cancel for a full refund for as long as you have not activated your licence. At checkout we explain that the licence key is supplied immediately and that activating it within the 14 days ends this statutory right to cancel; completing your purchase confirms you accept this.
As a courtesy, we also offer a no-questions 7-day refund window from the date of purchase, even if you have activated.
Your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 for faulty or misdescribed software always apply.

Community glossaries

If you hold a Pro licence, you can choose to upload a glossary — its name, description, the author name you enter, and its glosses — to our community library.

You keep ownership of what you upload. You grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive licence to host, store, review, adapt for safety (for example redaction), publish, and let others browse, download and use it, for as long as it stays published.
You confirm the glossary is yours to share, that it contains no secrets, credentials or personal data it should not, and that it does not infringe anyone else's rights.
We scan uploads for secrets and risky scripts, remove personal details from the name, description and author fields, and review submissions before publishing. We may decline, edit for safety, or remove any glossary, and we will remove yours on request — email support@trygloss.tech.
Glossaries other people publish remain their work; use them subject to these Terms.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

share a licence key beyond what these Terms allow, or use a single licence on more Macs than permitted at once;
reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble the app, except so far as UK law expressly allows;
circumvent, disable or interfere with licensing, activation or update checks;
upload glossaries that contain malware, secrets, unlawful content, or material you do not have the rights to;
attack, overload or gain unauthorised access to our sites or servers (for example denial-of-service attempts, brute-forcing sign-in, or probing the admin site).

Intellectual property

Gloss — including its software, design, brand and the content we create — belongs to JoshMTech or our licensors. Open-source components remain under their own licences; see the open-source notices. You receive only the rights set out in these Terms and the End User Licence Agreement.

Changes to the service

We may add, change or remove features, and we run the update and licence-check services described in the End User Licence Agreement and Privacy Policy. Because your installed copy runs locally, it keeps working — for its free and, where licensed, Pro features — during short service interruptions, within the offline limits described in the Licence Agreement.

If we ever stop offering Gloss, we will give active licence holders reasonable notice and explain what it means for your installed copy.

Our liability

Nothing in these Terms limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded under UK law.

We provide Gloss and the website with reasonable skill and care. We do not promise that the websites or the licence and update servers will always be available or error-free.

Subject to the paragraph above about liability we cannot exclude, our total liability to you for all claims in any 12-month period is limited to the amount you paid us in that period. We are not liable for loss of profits, business or data, or for indirect or consequential loss — please keep your own backups of your glossaries (iCloud sync is available). If you are a consumer, we are responsible for foreseeable loss we cause by breaking these Terms, but not for events outside our reasonable control, and this does not affect your statutory rights.

Suspension and termination

You can stop using Gloss at any time and delete the app. We may suspend or end your licence or account if you materially breach these Terms — for example sharing keys, circumventing licensing, or abusing our services. Where it is reasonable to do so, we will warn you first.

If your licence is revoked for breach, Pro features stop at the next licence check; the free tier keeps working. A full refund suspends the licence automatically, as described in the Refund Policy.

Your consumer rights

Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013, or other UK consumer law. If any part of these Terms is found to be unfair or unenforceable, the rest still applies.

Changes to these terms

We may update these Terms from time to time; the date at the top shows the latest version. If we make a material change, we will give reasonable notice before it takes effect — for example by emailing active licence holders or posting a notice on the site. Continuing to use Gloss after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.

Governing law

These Terms, and any dispute about them, are governed by the law of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, but if you are a consumer living elsewhere in the UK you may also bring proceedings in your local courts, and nothing here removes protections you have under the law of the place where you live.
