End User Licence Agreement
Last updated: 30 September 2026
Licence grant
The Gloss macOS app (the “Software”) is provided by JoshMTech (“we”, “us”, “our”) and is licensed, not sold. Subject to this agreement, we grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use the Software on Macs you own or control that run macOS 15 or later.
Free tier and Pro
- Free tier.Available to everyone with no licence and no time limit. It includes up to 10 active glosses you create — including dynamic, rich and script (GlossScript) glosses, date maths, filters, the picker, iCloud sync and per-app rules — plus importing snippets from other apps (only the first ten run on the free tier).
- Pro. A one-time purchase that unlocks unlimited glosses, the bundled presets, forms, key actions, nested glosses, importing and creating
.glossaryfiles, and on-device AI features. The AI features also require macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence. - A Pro licence may be active on one Mac at a time. To move it, deactivate in the app or your dashboard and activate on the other Mac.
- If you buy more than one Pro licence, for example for a team, you may give each licence key to one person who uses Gloss for you or with your permission, on a Mac they own or control. Each licence is still active on one Mac at a time, and you remain responsible for how the licences you bought are used.
Activation and licence checks
- Activating Pro registers your Mac with our licence server. After activation the Software checks the licence about every 6 hours.
- If it cannot reach the server, Pro keeps working offline for 7 days; after that Pro features pause (the free tier keeps working) until the next successful check.
- If a licence is suspended or revoked — for example after a refund or for breach — Pro features stop at the next check.
- What the Software sends during these checks is described in the Privacy Policy.
Updates
Every version of Gloss is free for everyone, for the life of the product. There are no subscriptions, renewals or paid upgrade windows. The Software updates itself using the open-source Sparkle framework, and we may issue updates for features, compatibility, security or licensing. You can turn automatic checks off in the app, though we recommend keeping Gloss up to date for security and compatibility.
Restrictions
You must not:
- share a licence key beyond what this agreement allows, or use a single licence on more Macs than permitted at once;
- circumvent, disable or interfere with licensing, activation or update mechanisms;
- reverse-engineer, decompile or disassemble the Software, except to the extent UK law expressly permits (for example permitted interoperability), and where the law requires you to ask us first, only after doing so;
- copy, rent, lease, sell, sublicense or distribute the Software, except as this agreement or the law allows;
- remove or alter any copyright, trade-mark or licence notices.
Open-source components
Gloss includes third-party open-source software licensed under its own terms. Those licences continue to apply to those components and, where they require it, permit the uses they describe regardless of this agreement. You can find the components we ship, their licences and copyright notices at trygloss.tech/legal/open-source.
Your content
Glosses and glossaries you create are yours. Gloss stores them on your Mac and, if you turn on iCloud sync, in your own iCloud account. The Software runs locally and does not send us what you type — see the Privacy Policy. If you choose to upload a glossary to the community library, the Terms of Service explain the licence you give us and our review process.
Term and termination
This licence starts when you first install the Software and continues until it ends. It ends automatically if you materially breach it — for example sharing keys, circumventing licensing, or unlawful reverse-engineering. Your Pro entitlement also ends if your licence is revoked, and a full refund suspends the licence automatically (see the Refund Policy).
On termination you must stop using the Software; you may continue to use the free tier if you keep within its terms. The restrictions, disclaimers, liability and governing-law sections survive termination.
Disclaimers and liability
Nothing in this licence limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited or excluded under UK law, and nothing affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
Subject to that, the Software is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the fullest extent the law allows, we exclude liability for indirect or consequential loss and for loss of profits, business or data — please keep backups. Subject to the paragraph above, our total liability to you for all claims connected with the Software in any 12-month period is limited to the amount you paid us for the licence in that period.
Governing law
This licence is governed by the law of England and Wales. The courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, and consumer-protection rules may also let you bring proceedings in your local courts.
